If you have not been trained to work with high voltage then have an amp technician service your amp. Never touch the amplifier chassis with one hand while probing with the other hand because a lethal shock can run between your arms through your heart. Use just one hand when working on a powered amp. See more tube amplifier safety info here. The “” in the model name comes from the circuit change date of The silverface amps are surprisingly similar to the coveted Fender blackface line of amps so many blackface mods and tweaks apply to the silverface lineup. It’s pretty easy to “blackface” these amps for a full generational regression. I usually prefer switchable mods that allow me to go back to the amp’s original circuit and tone. The often unused Normal channel is also a great place to mod away with to make that channel interesting and usable.

All of these guitars’ ID numbers do not follow the unique number sequence of the regular production guitars. Throughout the early s, Squier staples such as the Affinity and Standard series continued with few changes other than occasional color additions, although a new twin-pivot bridge with dating anodized saddles was added to the Standard Series once again mirroring Fender in design evolution.
The table below shows the Fender serial numbers as they were used from to Some of the early Affinities only used the dating number of the year. The Squier lineup was augmented in with Affinity series guitars and basses. The new neck plate only had the Fender F logo stamped in place. Non-traditional Squier Vista Series instruments were also introduced in this period.

Much of this is due to an unefficient phase inverter circuit design. In build quality and component selection brands of caps, resistors, pots the silverfaces are not as robust as the blackface models. The glued and stapled baffles on the silverface amps is to us one of the bigger differences between the blackface and silverface amps, or should we say, the cabinets. Still, many people consider the tone of the silverface Princeton Reverb just as good as the blackface. So, why would you want to enhance or mod a PR?
Not necessarily. So why increase the threashold of tube heaven? If you need a bigger amp on stage, go ahead reading below. Having that said, tone is not about volume. We think the Oxfords are underestimated. This speaker matches the amp and cabinet size perfectly and you get a classic, scooped fender blackface tone from a little amp.

The Princeton Reverb, on the other hand, has an extra 12AX7 preamp tube which gives it a more overdriven sound when the volume is pushed.
We tend to select guitar amps to cover in Sound On Sound because they either use new technology or are particularly suitable for recording in a typical project—studio setup. Well, this one uses unashamedly old technology, albeit with a bit of a twist, but it certainly scores very heavily on the latter point. The name is derived from the profile of the aluminium angle used to trim the baffle, which looks like roof flashing used to keep rain water away from walls.
Negative feedback is used to reduce noise and distortion, and also to help keep amplifier circuits stable, but most Fender tube amps are inherently stable anyway, so you can reduce the negative feedback all the way down to zero if you want, in order to benefit from a bit more gain and a more gradual transition into distortion, albeit at the expense of a little more noise.
Rear connections. The rectifier is the period—correct 5AR4 later models use 5U4. The amp as a whole exhibits commendably low noise, both electronic, in the form of hiss and hum, and mechanical, in the shape of sundry rattles and buzzes that often plague small combos. There is a lot of bass anywhere above four on the dial — probably too much for anyone but Jim Campilongo — but there is always enough range to dial it out, and it certainly gives authority to single-note lines played on a bridge single—coil!
The bias—operated tremolo is also nice — rather than interrupting the signal with a variable resistor at the preamp stage, as a Fender opto—coupler trem does, the Princeton type actually modulates the bias of the output valves. I had no trouble hearing myself next to a fairly hard—hitting drummer, or even on a smallish open—air concert stage.
Maybe you should be thinking about a Deluxe, or even a Twin.

These are such nice amps. Small but not too small on the tone. Perfect for small rooms and recording. The Jensens hold up the best and sound the best especially the C10N.

I find the research cruel, and I find no humor in it. The Zephyr, Yes, yes, yes, Concierto was beyond beautiful. And a company called CTI created some brilliant recordings. This is but one of many. I have this recording on vinyl and cd. Take a tune that you have the lead sheet for. In addition to learning the melody and chords, learn the arpeggios in this manner. However, the first drip-edge models appeared in late August of as the black-face cosmetics were being replaced by silver-faced amps. The most popular amps, like the Deluxe Reverb, were the first to receive the new look, which included not only the silver face-plate and aluminum drip-edge, but also a slightly different grill cloth with added subtle vertical blue stripes.
A few models during this early silverface period actually have the new silver face-plate and the old blackface style back-plate, and the earliest silver faceplates have the mysterious slim black vertical lines more on this later. It makes sense that the amps that were not selling as well were the last to receive the new look, as they were the models for which the old black-face parts lasted the longest, and inversely the most popular models were the first to get the update, as their black-face parts ran out the earliest.
What does this mean? It means that you may see a drip-edge Deluxe Reverb with a build date as early as mid, and a black-face non-reverb bandmaster or Vibrolux as late as February of

As with Fender’s wonderful Deluxe, the Princeton was one of the very first amps Leo made under his own name – dating all the way back to – and one of the few model names to remain in more or less continuous production, seeing out Fender’s less well-known ‘Ivy League’ amps, the Yale and Harvard. Everyone has their own favourite version of this wonderful small amplifier, and at the risk of offending some of the tweed fanatics out there, we reckon that with this reissue of the reverb-equipped variant Fender has probably picked the one that’s garnered the most praise over the years.
It combines the classic good looks of the pre-CBS ‘blackface’ with the mis-named Vibrato effect and that great spring reverb. Originally intended as a smaller, more portable combo for practice and beginners, the Princeton Reverb quickly found its true calling in the hands of studio players and, along with the tweed Deluxe, is probably one of the most recorded amps of all time. Like the original, this re-issue has a smart, perfectly proportioned cabinet covered in thick black Tolex, combined with a silver sparkle grille cloth and black control panel with six skirted control knobs for volume, treble, bass, vibrato speed and intensity and depth for the reverb effect.
The to Champ, Harvard, Princeton, Deluxe; the to Vibrolux, the to Bassman, and all the tube reverb units have their own.
Fender Tube amp codes: – look for a 2 letter code stamped on the tube chart inside the back of the amp – the first letter is the year, and the second letter is the month. An amp stamped NA would have been made in Jan. Here is a list of the first letter showing the year of manufacture. These codes have nothing to do with the serial number that is stamped on the right rear of the chassis – Those numbers are posted below.
These codes are for amps with the serial number beginning with a letter:. EIA numbers taken from the transformers may help you to determine the date of production on amps that fall between the different dating schemes.

Advances have been made with regards to the production of tolex amps and it appears that much of this information can be applied to late s tweed amps as well.
