The Aller Vale Pottery was formed in on the northern edge of the village of Kingskerswell in South Devon , England on the likely site of a medieval pottery. It became well known for the creation of art pottery at the end of the 19th century and gained Royal patronage, but declined thereafter, closing on this site in about The name continued in use until related to the production of mass-produced motto ware for the tourist market.
There had probably been a pottery on the site in medieval times, as evidenced by the excavation of medieval tiles there. Phillips changed the focus of the company to make builders’ earthenware —drainpipes, roof tiles, chimney pots and the like. Phillips was influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement and the ideals of William Morris , leading him to set up cottage classes in Kingskerswell and the nearby villages of Abbotskerswell and Coffinswell to teach useful skills to the uneducated young.

A strong profile, a sophisticated combination of geometrical design elements, and a reliance on the tactile appeal of the smooth terra cotta surface characterize this ale jug from the Watcombe pottery. In two places these rings frame bands of relief decoration. Slightly below the jug’s widest point is a row of boldly modeled and enamel black studs of a cabachon shape with subtle molded vertical ribs between each.
This soft ribbing is expanded in a second decorative band where the form tapers to its foot. A flaring black enameled handle completes the geometry of the piece. Of course there is one non-geometric element of the design. The spout which emerges from the collar takes the form of a smiling bearded face. Goats ears reveal the character’s identity as a satyr and suggests that the jug was intended for something stronger than milk or water.
